Born in Philadelphia to Ellwood Douglas Tunnell, Sr. and Sarah Baylor Tunnell, Skip was raised in Berwyn, where he attended Conestoga High School and formed lifelong roots in the community. He later made Malvern his home for over 50 years alongside his beloved wife of 58 years, Rebecca.
Skip attended Villanova University before proudly serving in the United States Army from 1961 to 1967. During his service, he was selected as the Outstanding Trainee of his basic training company and earned the distinction of Soldier of the Month — an honor he received twice within 13 months. His discipline, leadership, and commitment to excellence were evident early and remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
His faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was an active and devoted member of Paoli Presbyterian Church and also an active member of African Rural Outreach and Development, reflecting his deep commitment to service and outreach beyond his immediate community.
He was the beloved husband of Rebecca, devoted father to Douglas (Patty) and Anne Reever (Anthony), and an immensely proud grandfather to Megan Tunnell, Sarah McSwain (Connor), Madison Tunnell, Ella Tunnell, Danielle Reever, and Jackson Reever. He was also blessed with his great-granddaughter, Lucy, who brought him tremendous joy. Nothing meant more to Skip than time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Skip had a lifelong love of cars and was an enthusiastic follower of Formula 1 and IndyCar racing. He enjoyed traveling, with Egypt holding a particularly special place in his heart. He also had a deep appreciation for good food. He never passed up the brown bread from The Cheesecake Factory, adored his daughter Anne’s baked goods, and had a special fondness for ice cream — especially the four-scoop sampler from Handel's Homemade Ice Cream with two scoops of black raspberry and two scoops of coffee.
Known for his impeccable style, Skip was an extremely snazzy dresser — always dressed to the nines, even for a simple trip to the zoo with his grandchildren. He carried himself with confidence, warmth, and an extensive vocabulary that reflected both his intelligence and his love of language.
Above all, Skip will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to his family, his strong faith, and the pride he took in those he loved. His legacy lives on in the memories he created, the values he instilled, and the family who will forever carry his spirit forward.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 21 at 10:30 a.m. at Paoli Presbyterian Church. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m.
