Herb Oliver, 97 — Zummobike Mechanic, Mentor, Friend Herb Oliver, our most senior member and beloved mentor, passed away on August 19, 2025, at the age of 97. Coaxed out of retirement at 87, Herb joined Zummobike to share a lifetime of tools, skill and wisdom with our young mechanics. He quickly became a living example of what it means to think clearly, work thoroughly, and take pride in craftsmanship.
Herb’s life was defined by grit, ingenuity, and endless curiosity. He built his knowledge and character through a lifetime of hard work and determination: Growing up with a strong mother during the Depression. Pumping gas and working at a farm stand as early as second grade. Tinkering on his brother’s cars before buying his first car in sixth grade. Bringing his work ethic and mechanical skill to a busy Barrington, NJ gas station in seventh grade. Befriending seasoned mechanics at a Ford dealership and becoming the go-to fix-it guy for both cars and coal trucks.
At just 16, raised his hand to haul coal from Western Pennsylvania. Learning how to race and flip cars for both sport and livelihood. Serving in the U.S. Army, where he ran a portable bakery and baked bread for generals and visiting dignitaries—including President Charles de Gaulle.
As a father, Herb blessed the Oliver family with a life rich in lessons and experiences:
• A home he built alongside his father-in-law in Haddon Heights, NJ.
• Steady leadership that complemented their mother’s love and strength.
• An entrepreneurial spirit, teaching resourcefulness through recycling newspapers and “treasure hunting / trash picking”.
• A basement shop filled with tools, Popular Science magazines, and countless repair projects—all paired with his patient instruction.
• A Depression-era work ethic that inspired his children to work from an early age.
• Adventures in sailing, motor boating, and camping.
• Countless lessons behind the wheel of VW Bugs and Buses, including “economy runs” that made fuel efficiency both a science and a family challenge.
Herb carried this remarkable energy into his later years, building a log home in Clermont, FL in his 60s and another in Boone, NC in his 70s. He never lost his spark for learning, teaching, and creating.
To us at Zummobike, Herb wasn’t just a mechanic—he was a coach, a storyteller, and a living reminder that passion has no expiration date. His presence in the shop inspired countless young people to aim higher, work harder, and take pride in every detail.
In the end, Herb’s true legacy was not measured in cars fixed, homes built, or bikes restored, but in the countless lives touched by his kindness and generosity. He gave more than he ever asked for in return, embodying a rare spirit of altruism. To know Herb was to be reminded that a life well lived is one that leaves others better for having crossed its path.
