
Wayne Ambler Cunningham was born in Abington Hospital on April 28, 1932. He graduated from Abington High School in the Class of 1950, and went on to Duke University where he earned his BA in Economics in 1954. While at Duke, he was selected to the All-South soccer team, Upon graduation from Duke he was drafted into the Army where he served in the Counter Intelligence Corp.
He began a career as a salesman for Allen, Lane and Sott printing company, but soon moved into sales for for G. D. Searle and Ortho Pharmaceuticals, but his love was teaching and coaching. Wayne returned to Temple University to earn his Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Health Education. He taught and coached men’s soccer and women’s softball at several colleges until his retirement in 1995.
Wayne was active in sports all of his life. He was a member of the World Championship team “Sal’s Lunch” which won the World Softball Championship in 1969. He played soccer for Germantown Cricket Club and Moorestown Cricket Club, and for many years he played softball at Max Myers Playground in Philadelphia. After he retired, he coached girls' softball at William Tennant High School and New Hope High School . Wayne refereed soccer and wrestling for over 40 years, One of his great joys was playing shuffleboard at Legacy Oaks.
Wayne was inducted in to the Philadelphia Softball Hall of Fame, the Abington High School Hall of Fame, and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his daughters, Cynthia Powell (Roy), Wendy Martin and his sons, Craig (Nancy) and Bruce (Rose), his sister Connie Wyatt (Hugh) eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Interment is private at Abington Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to visit with the family at 10 am at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Rd., Abington, PA 19001 on Thursday, August 21. A church service will follow at 11 am.
