William “Bill” Webster passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on March 3, 2025. Born on June 12, 1948, in the Holmesburg neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia, he was the first son of Louise and Bill Webster and first grandson of doting grandparents. Bill grew up playing ‘ball’ every day with his brothers, down the corner at the playground. He had an Inquirer paper route and still could remember the names of all the people on his paper route. Bill loved the things that matter most to him, sports, good music, great books, cherished friendships, his wife and time spent with family and friends.
A graduate of Father Judge High School in 1966, where he excelled academically, Bill went on to attend Allentown College on a scholarship, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. It was at Allentown that Bill, a boy from the city, grew to love the open spaces of the county and formed lifelong friendships that he maintained and cherished for the rest of his life. He was passionate about literature, film, sports, politics, and music, and his love for these interests never waned throughout his life. Whether hiking trails, playing or watching sports or listening to music – always music, Bill enjoyed the world’s beauty. One of his greatest joys was discovering Mount Desert Island, and Acadia National Park in Maine, a magical place that held a special spot in his heart, where he spent countless summers with Sarah Ann, surrounded by nature, friends, and family.
His college summers spent working in Wildwood, New Jersey, were especially memorable, and it was there that he met Sarah Ann, the love of his life and best friend. They would go on to share 54 years of marriage, creating a life full of laughter, love, and shared experiences. Bill was a loving husband and a proud stepfather, loving grandfather, and uncle.
Bill’s deep appreciation for life endured to the end. He loved watching Philadelphia sports teams, listening to and watching NPR/PBS programs, listening to his music playlist, savoring good food, drinking fine wine, and celebrating holidays and birthdays with friends and family. His warmth and generosity made everyone feel welcome, and he could always be counted on for his kindness and wit.
In addition to his wife Sarah Ann, Bill is survived by his brother Larry Webster, stepchildren Arlene Farrell, Ronald Farrell, and Karen Farrell, along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. He was preceded in death by parents William and Louise Webster, brother Robert Webster, sister Marieann Mullen, and stepson Michael Farrell.
A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Bill’s life and the indelible mark he left on everyone he met, on March 15, 2025. Bill’s legacy will live on through the love he gave, the stories he shared, the knowledge he passed on, and the moments of joy he so freely shared with his friends and family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
