Dana was born in Somerset Pennsylvania, son of the late James Hartford Menser and Anna Marie (Sulli) Menser. He was a graduate of Somerset Area School District and received his Bachelor’s of Music Education from Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music in Winchester Virginia. A gifted trombonist, Dana shared his passion for music as a member of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, this being his 50th season and “A Touch of Brass,” a quartet he cofounded. He brought joy to many through his talent and dedication. Music was not just something he played, it was a part of who he was. He retired from the Somerset Area School District after 30 years as a band director. He taught the love of music to hundreds of students, many continuing the same love of music as he did. He had a special fondness for his 1934 Pontiac, a treasured family car that held countless memories and stories, reflecting his appreciation for history and tradition. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed playing pool with his buddies, where laughter, camaraderie, and friendly competition were always present. Above all else, Dana was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, with whom he would have celebrated 44 years of marriage this coming June. He was a loving father to daughter Laura Bielen and her husband Mike, and son Mark and his wife Jenn. He was a proud and adoring grandfather (Buttons and Papa) to Daniel, Maddie, Mila, and Posie, who were the light of his life. His love, guidance, and gentle presence will continue to be felt through them. He is also survived by a brother, Ron and wife Debbie, of Somerset, Pennsylvania and brother in law Bill Richardson and wife Claudia of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, along with nephews Bryan Richardson, Chris and Matt Menser, and niece, Erin Richardson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Ann.
A man of deep faith, Dana lived his life guided by compassion, humility, and service. He now rests in the Peace of Christ, reunited with loved ones who went before him. His family finds comfort in the promise of eternal life. He will be remembered for his warmth, his music, and the love he shared so freely with those around him.
