She was the wife of the late Oscar Delos Cliver whom she was married to for 69 years.
She was born on October 29, 1931 in Trenton, NJ and was the daughter of Robert J Schmidt Sr. and Anna E. (Reitter) Schmidt. She lived in Morrisville, PA until her marriage when they moved to Hulmeville, PA and raised their three children there for 30 years. Joan was blessed to stay home and raise their three children until she went to Trenton University and got her teaching degree, substitute teaching until her retirement. She was affectionately called Rambo’s mother by the teachers who appreciated her loving, firm manner of handling boisterous students. Joan was active in Lutheran churches beginning with Trinity Lutheran in Trenton, NJ, and then Redeemer Lutheran in Penndel, PA, where she actively served as a Sunday School teacher as well as various committees until moving to Felton where she was a member of St James Lutheran, Brogue, PA. She served on the Altar Guild in the last two churches, and a Bible Study was happily held in her home when she became homebound.
In addition, she was actively engaged in her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives, teaching them to swim, saying grace before meals, and leaving large, encouraging signs around her house to address the current behaviors, urging all to Be Kind; Choose good friends and have a good life; Never take drugs and you’ll never become addicted. She hosted over 40 years of pizza every Sunday for all of the family. She actively prayed that everyone in the family now and in generations to come, would come to Jesus before He returns.
Joan is survived by her daughter Carol (Cliver) Hopkins and Dave, Fenmore, and two sons Scott and Janie (Gilbert) Cliver, Edwards, CO, and Mark and Adrienne (Sorrell) Cliver, Boonville, NY. She was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Claus and brother Robert Schmidt, Jr. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice York, PA or St James Lutheran Church, Brogue, PA.
