John Sargent Newbold III, "Jock", "Pop-Pop" (77), of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. John was born to John Sargent Newbold II and Mary Ernestine Dexter Newbold in Bryn Mawr, PA, on August 11, 1944. After graduating from The Haverford School in Haverford, PA in 1962, he went on to study Biology at Rollins College in Winterpark, FL where he met his future wife April MacDonald. After graduation, he joined the navy, completed flight school, and earned his wings. He later joined the Pennsylvania National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, where he became a helicopter pilot.
After retiring from the military, he dedicated his life to his family, his church, teaching, and his volunteer work. He taught troubled-youth math at Vision Quest for five years. He was appointed a life time vestry member at St John’s Episcopal Church in Carlisle, PA, and also served as a lay Eucharistic minister, office volunteer, and vacation bible school volunteer. He participated in every Tangier Island Mission trip offered by a sister church (2015-2022), running the tree planting project; next month's trip would have been his sixth mission trip to the island. He advocated on the importance of blood donation, organizing countless blood drives and donating over 50 gallons himself. He also served as a spiritual volunteer at Carlisle Hospital for many years.
He was a man of faith and family, and celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in 2019. He loved being surrounded by people, especially children, with whom he always requested a high five. When not at church, with his family, or volunteering, you'd find him immersed in a good book or a challenging jigsaw puzzle, watching for bluebirds, tending to his garden, or enjoying the company of his cats.
John was predeceased by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his two brothers Dexter (Vivien) and Clint, two sisters, Adeline/Lisa and Maris (Jim), sister-in-law Aurora Lehman (Mark), son H. Jefferys (Michelle), daughter Virginia Pepper Tilden (Joe), three grandsons Dylan Jefferys, Noah Jameson, and Sylar John, two granddaughters Cloe Elizabeth and Jocelyn Phoenix, nephews Hoyt, Joe, James, Tim, nieces Holly, Terrell, Alyssa, Kelly, Marina, and Charlotte, and several great nephews and nieces.
He will be missed but never forgotten. He is at peace, and reunited with his wife, his family, and friends that went before him, and his God.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 1:00pm at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 N. Hanover St. Carlisle, PA 17013.
