

Richard Jacob Whatley, age 86, Fayette, Maine, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2018, surrounded by his family after complications from a long illness. Richard (Dick) is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Anne Bernice Whatley (nee McKiel). He was a devoted father to William (Tina), Suzanne, Timothy, Janet Blum (Brian), Edward (Denice), and 15 grandchildren.
Dick was born on June 21, 1931 in Dunellen, NJ, the middle son of the late Ellis and Gladys Whatley. Dick earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maine and a Master of Science from Springfield College. Coach Whatley retired from Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA after 34 years of service. From 1959 to 1993, Coach Whatley held numerous titles – Head Football Coach, Head Track Coach, and Dean of Students; retiring as Professor Emeritus of Exercise and Sports Science. After retirement, he was honored to be elected to the Ursinus Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach and mentor. Coach Whatley continued to coach during retirement in Maine at Colby College, Kents Hill School, and Winthrop High School.
Richard will be buried in Albion, Maine, on August 11, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Ursinus College Athletics Department 601 E. Main Street, Collegeville, PA 19426
