Susan Viannah Zartman Paul, lovingly known as Sue, Susie, or Suzie, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at Hanover Hospital. She was the daughter of Horace G Zartman Sr, and Ruth Kump Zartman. She was predeceased by an older sister, Minnie Lee Shearer, and brother Horace G. Zartman Jr. (Pork). Susan resided at the Brethren Home at Cross Keys Village.
Born on March 16, 1939, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, she lived a long and meaningful life of 86 years, defined by her kindness, generosity, and devotion to family and community. A 1957 graduate of Eichelberger Senior High School, Susan cherished the friendships she made there, many of which remained throughout her life. In 1961, she became a founding member of a beloved card club that endured until the time of her passing.
At just 18, she married Larry E. Raubenstine, and together they welcomed three children. Kris E. Raubenstine, father of Amy M Sorice (husband Joe, parents of great grandchildren Natalie and Lucas.) and Scott E. Raubenstine (wife Gina, parents of great grandchildren Chloe and Beau) Kandie J. Raubenstine and partner, Kent S. Warner. And Krystal A. Baum (husband Joel, parents to Hunter R. Baum with fiancé Emily Spiegelberg, Mckenna Baum and partner Robert Morris, parents of great grandson Karsen K Morris) and Mason G Baum. She also had a special relationship with Angelo (AJ) Jordan, whom she mentored and considered a grandson. She was also close to her sister, Martha Bell and her husband Joe, and her sister-in-law Robin Zartman.
Susan was a woman of many talents and passions. An accomplished seamstress, she found great joy in sewing, quilting, crocheting, and gardening. She quilted many blankets for family, and made her daughter’s wedding dress. She filled her home with the aroma of her home-cooked meals and baked goods, and she never missed an opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of those she loved. She was an avid Scrabble player, book lover, and traveler—always treasuring visits to Wyoming to see her daughter and family. Her compassion extended to animals, a cause she passionately supported. Active in her church community, Susan also volunteered at the Brethren Home, and when her children were younger, with youth fellowship groups, PTO, and both Boy and Girl Scouts. Above all, she will be remembered as nurturing, resilient, creative, and deeply loyal to her family.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 15 at the Nicarry Meeting House on the Brethren Home campus, with fellowship to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA or an animal shelter of your choice.
“He Only Takes the Best…God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be; so He put His arms around you, and whispered, ‘come to me’. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.”
