
Born in Belle Vernon, PA, she was the daughter of the late Zella May (Sickman) and Benjamin Young Wilkinson.
Zella graduated from Munhall High School, attended Carnegie Mellon University, and graduated with a degree in elementary education from California University of Pennsylvania. While a student there, she was a member of the rifle team and was ranked 7th in the country for sharp shooting, an honor she was very proud of. Zella taught 3rd grade in the Pittsburgh Area School District. She later became a substitute teacher for the Coolbaugh School District, Monroe County and Carlisle Area School District. Zella also privately tutored students in reading, math, and english.
She was an accomplished pianist and had a beautiful soprano voice. Zella was a talented seamstress, quilter, and knitter. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle where she sung in the choir and served as a deacon. After moving from Carlisle to Enola in 2002, she attended the Camp Hill United Methodist Church.
As the wife of an Army Colonel, she traveled all over the world including Germany, Greece, France, Holland, Spain, Portugal, and England.
In addition to her parents Zella was preceded in death by 4 older brothers, Harold, Benjamin, John, and Samuel Wilkinson; nephew Jack Wilkinson, and many beloved dogs.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Frank A. Smith of Harrisburg; daughter, Zella Smith Anderson and husband Joseph Anderson of Mechanicsburg; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held 7pm on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at the Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 417 S. 22nd Street, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
