Reed Jackson ''Jack'' Dunn, Jr. Reed “Jack” Dunn, Jr. of Pittson, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the age of 91. A native of western Pennsylvania and born in Washington on April 8, 1934, he was the son of the late Reed J. Dunn and Marjorie (Debolt) Dunn. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-five years, Almeda Marie (Engle) Dunn, and his brother, Daniel L. Dunn. He is survived by his partner, Naomi Meyer, with whom he enjoyed the renewal of a loving relationship that had its origins at Penn State in the 1950s. He is also survived by his son, Bradley S. Dunn of York, his sister-in-law, Theresa Dunn of Northridge, California; his niece, Claudia (Charles); his nephews, Daniel Jr. (Jodie) and Timothy; and five grand-nieces and nephews. Jack grew up on a farm in southwestern Pennsylvania, graduating from East Washington High School. He attended Pennsylvania State University (PSU), graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography in 1955 and a Master of Science Degree in Geography in 1957. He was a proud life member of the Penn State Alumnae Association. Jack was the Director of the York County Planning Commission from 1965 until his retirement in 2000. A professional planner, he had previously worked for the consulting engineering firm of Michael Baker, Jr. Inc. in Rochester, Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce in Harrisburg. He was a charter member of both the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Certified PJ, Planners. He also held memberships in the National Association of County Planners and the Pennsylvania Planning Association, serving as President of the latter Association from 1971-1972. In 1999, he served on the Governor's Sound Land Use Advisory Committee. Jack was involved in a variety of community activities. He was President of the Olde York Street Faire in 1982, served on the Boards of Directors of the Community Progress Council, the York County Industrial Development Corporation, the York County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Susquehanna Conference. Jack was a founding member and served on the Board of Directors of the Fann and Natural Lands Trust of York County, held memberships in the York County Heritage Trust, Southcentral Assembly for Effective Governance, York County Heritage Rail-Trail, York East Rotary Club, Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, and 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania. Jack was honored by the York County Chamber of Commerce as the 1987-88 Appointed Official of the Year. He was named as a member of the York County Parks Emeritus Board, was the recipient of the 2003 Achievement Award by York County Parks, and was honored by the York County Planning Commission as the initial recipient of their annual planning achievement award. Jack was the recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Planning Award of the Pennsylvania Planning Association. An avid bicyclist, Jack belonged to the Rails to Trails Conservancy, the Hanover Cycles, and the League of American Bicyclists. Jack’s varied interests included environmental and energy issues, genealogy, and history; he penned and published several novels throughout his retirement. He was proud of his rural heritage and often spoke of his appreciation for the life values he learned from his parents. A celebration of Jack’s life is planned for Saturday, September 20, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 105 Irem Road in Dallas, PA. The visitation with family will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am.
